St Leonard's Fete – Call For Help

Fete BuntingSt Leonard’s Fete will be on the 25th June this year and we need your help.If you can spare a small amount of time on the day or, if not on the day, perhaps in the preparation leading up to the day, then your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
We need helpers on the day in most areas, but specifically this year we are looking for some additional people to help with the bouncy castle. We have established that we need at least 2 teams of 2 people, working in hour long shifts, from 11am through to around 4:30pm. This involves taking the money, ensuring the correct number of children are on at any one time, and watching for safe play.
We need help to find donations of raffle prizes:

Do you go out for lunch or dinner to venues in the surrounding area?

Do you know any companies that would be willing to donate various gifts or services?

Do you feel comfortable about asking for donations?

If you do then we would welcome any donations of prizes or sponsorship that you are able to collect. There is no need to attend fete meetings if you would prefer not to, we just need to be updated on your progress along the way.
We need help to find sponsors: Do you know anyone who would be willing to sponsor the following items?

  • Marquee – £650 al, or part cost would be a great help
  • BBQ, Table and Chairs – £330
  • Children’s Entertainer – Jimbo – £200
  • Sound Man – £110
  • Football Competition Costs – £480
  • Coventry Brass Band – normally sponsored by Keller

If you can help please get in touch with Fiona Tetlow on 07738 281 238 or Frances Wintle at dandfwintle@gmail.com.

Wassailing At Ryton Community Orchard

Community OrchardWhy not come along to this year’s annual Wassail at the Ryton Community Orchard.
Initially we meet at the Blacksmith’s Arms at 6:00pm for a procession to the orchard at 6:30pm.
It is traditional to dress up; Top Hats, Bowler hats or hats decorated with ivy or mistletoe, but this is optional. Children may dress up as they wish.
Please bring noise making equipment – saucepan, rattle, anything that will make a noise and torches or lanterns and please wear sensible shoes.
For more information on what a Wassail is, then Wikipedia is a good start, where it explains that ‘wassail‘ is from the old english “wæs hæl”, which means “be you healthy”, but more specifically that it relates to apples and cider. It seems that the purpose of ‘wassailing‘ is to awaken the apples trees and scare away the evil spirits, hence why the details of the event ask you to bring along anything that makes a noise.
Wassailing is a an English traditional ceremony that was most common in the southern cider producing counties of England that involves singing and drinking to the health of the apples trees for their forthcoming season and as such usually takes place as part of the Twelfth Night (after Christmas) celebrations.
The Project Britain website details a little more about wassailing and mentions it as one of many other Twelfth Night celebrations.

Candlelit Christmas Concert with Carols

Come along to a ‘baroque’ candlelit christmas concert, performed by the Warwickshire Baroque. The concert is to be held at St Leonard’s Church on Saturday 5th December at 7:30pm. Tickets are £7.50 and can be purchased from the Rev David Wintle  (see Event for contact details).
The Warwickshire Baroque say (taken from their website):

We are a group of semi-professional and amateur players who aim to bring music from the 17th and 18th centuries to life by adopting original baroque principles rather than mid-20th century performance practice.

The concert is directed by Eddie Jones and lead by Michael Williamson.

Wroth Silver Ceremony 2015

Wroth Silver Ceremony
This is said to be Britain’s longest running annual ceremony being recorded as ‘ongoing’ in 1086 and on this site since 1170.
The ceremony takes place at the stone, the base of an old wayside cross, on the mound at the top of Knightlow Hill every ‘Martinmas Eve before sun-rising’. That means on 11 November every year just at first light the Wroth Money is collected from the parishes of the Hundred of Knightlow (this includes Ryton and Bubbenhall) by the Agent to the Duke of Buccleuch.  In practice that is about 6.45am but it varies with the first light of dawn. Anyone is welcome to attend. Many people will be regular attenders and will be bringing their children.
The actual collection from the 25 parishes only lasts about four and a half minutes so do not be late!
Many people will already have been to the local pub, The Queens Head in Bretford (CV23 0JY Tel. 02476 542671) for the traditional drink of rum and hot milk. The bar usually opens at 6.00 am
All will then return to The Queens Head for a breakfast and speeches. Please note that breakfast tickets need to be pre-booked directly with the Queens Head, (breakfast cost was £13 in 2014. Included in the price is a glass of rum and hot milk with which to toast the health of His Grace and a churchwarden pipe (tobacco supplied). People will be departing by about 8.45am. Sunny Day Out For Football And Fête

Fete BuntingWhat a lovely sunny day we had for the annual Fête and Football Competition. Fun was had by all, and hopefully this should go a long way to raising sufficient money to run St Leonard’s Church. If you have ever wondered why we need to raise money for the church and what it gets spent on, then read about fund raising for St Leonard’s in Rev Wintle’s own words.
The BBQ was a huge hit, running out of food and having to visit the local Co-Op for more stock. If that is anything to go on, we hope the other stalls also saw record demand.
A great many people put a lot of time and effort into organising the annual Fête and Football Competition and so we thank them all for their efforts in making this annual event such a success and of course we also thank everyone who attends and supports our community and church. We hope to see you all again next year – fingers crossed for a repeat of this year’s great weather.
Below are some photos of the day. If you have more photos we can publish then you can send them to us using Contact Us (use Category of Other).

If your Club or Group or meet on a regular basis then check you are mentioned in the Events calendar and that those details are correct. If you have any special events (like fund raisers or AGMs) or simply wish to promote the existance of your Club, Group or Activity then all you need to do is write us an article (it doesn’t have to be long, but it can be) and send it to us using Contact Us and we will publish it. Please include some images if at all possible.
Even better, if you feel you would like to contribute to the content of the website on a more regular basis then we can train you and help you become one of our website Authors. You can take a look at the current Author’s Guide to get an idea of what might be involved in becoming an author.
If you feel something is missing from the website then let us know. If you know about something that should be on the website then let us know…content only gets onto the website if you tell us about it.
We hope you find the website useful and thank you all for your continued support.
