Heritage Weekend – Ryton

‘Rugby Borough Council is undertaking a series of Heritage Open Days to stimulate interest in the Borough’s history, both to existing residents and potential tourists. These Heritage Days are taking place on back-to-back weekends in September and Ryton residents may wish to take advantage of the local sites being promoted.’
‘A number of the Borough’s Churches are holding events in the theme of peace and reconciliation, and St Leonard’s Church is participating from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 September. Also worth knowing about it Ryton Organic Gardens and Coombe Abbey Country Park offer of free entry to the public over both weekends. Nearby Princethorpe College will be inviting visitors to tour through the historic part of their estate too.’
‘I encourage any interested villager to view the Council’s website where further details can be obtained: www.therugbytown.co.uk/HOD2018. We hope to see many of you at the various events!’

Wassail 2018

Come and join us to wassail the orchard on Saturday 13th January. We meet at the Blacksmith’s Arms at 6.00 pm for a drink before processing to the orchard at about 6.30 pm. Once at the orchard there is a short ceremony.
Wassailing refers to a traditional ceremony that involves singing and drinking to the health of trees on Twelfth Night in the hope that they might better thrive. The purpose of wassailing is to awaken the apple trees and to scare away evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit in the Autumn.
Please bring torches or lanterns and wear sensible shoes, the orchard is not flat. If you would like to dress up, please do. Top hats, bowler hats or hats decorated with ivy or mistletoe are traditional. Children may dress up as they wish. Please bring something to make a noise! Saucepan lid and spoon, rattle, drum, bells, whistles etc. We need to chase the evil spirits out of the orchard. The more noise the better!
Come and join in the fun!

Wroth Silver 2017

This is said to be Britain’s longest running annual ceremony being recorded as ‘ongoing’ in 1086 and on this site since 1170.
The ceremony takes place at the stone, the base of an old wayside cross, on the mound at the top of Knightlow Hill every ‘Martinmas Eve before sun-rising’. That means on 11 November every year just at first light the Wroth Money is collected from the parishes of the Hundred of Knightlow (this includes Ryton and Bubbenhall) by the Agent to the Duke of Buccleuch. In practice that is about 6.45am but it varies with the first light of dawn. Anyone is welcome to attend. Many people will be regular attenders and will be bringing their children.
The actual collection from the 25 parishes only lasts about four and a half minutes so do not be late!
Many people will already have been to the local pub, The Queens Head in Bretford (CV23 0JY Tel. 02476 542671) for the traditional drink of rum and hot milk. The bar usually opens at 6.00 am
All will then return to The Queens Head for a breakfast and speeches. Please note that breakfast tickets need to be pre-booked directly with the Queens Head, (breakfast cost was £13 in 2014. Included in the price is a glass of rum and hot milk with which to toast the health of His Grace and a churchwarden pipe (tobacco supplied). People will be departing by about 8.45am. Further information on: http://www.wrothsilver.org.uk.

Caroline & Lillian Sutch enjoy a sit down next to the stone. (1933)

You can just see the Mayor of Rugby (in white next to the stone) witnessing the ancient tax being paid.
