Police Advise on Home Security
/in News/by PC ClerkDefensive planting is the term used to describe the way you can use certain prickly plants, bushes and shrubs to deter burglars. Think about using defensive planting around vulnerable areas such as windows, fences, boundary walls and drainpipes. Everyone enjoys having a well kept, attractive garden and there’s no reason why upping the security in your garden should mean otherwise.
A few examples are:
Berberis – a vibrant shrub with vivid red leaves, has sharp spine like prickles, reaches 6ft, good for hedging and growing by walls.
Rosa Rugosa, aka Rubra – a flowering shrub with densely prickled stems, can reach 6ft, excellent as an impenetrable hedge.
Pyracantha – a vigorous evergreen shrub with white flowers in May, followed by orange or red berries, great for hedging, growing under windows or around doorways.
Holly – usually grown as a small tree or large bush, can reach up to 50ft, spiny, glossy dark green leaves all year round, excellent hedging plant.
Hawthorn, Japonica and Acanthus are just a few other examples.

World War One Centenary Benches Unveiled
/in Events, News/by PC ClerkDunsmore Councillor Howard Roberts has unveiled World War One Centenary benches in honour of those residents from Ryton-on-Dunsmore who died during the Great War.
In front of many of the villagers he said, “It is a great honour to speak as we unveil this bench in honour of the 18 men from Ryton who lost their lives fighting for our country in the Great War.”
“As a schoolboy, like many before and since, I studied a poem by Rupert Brooke called ‘The Soldier’. Brooke a former Rugby school pupil begins his piece with the iconic lines; If I should die, think only of this of me, that there’s some corner of a foreign field that is forever England.”
“The poem has been criticised for romancing the horrors of war, but I want to dwell on some sentiments of Brooke. The overriding thrusts of his words are pride in England and where he comes from.” He talks fondly of England, but most movingly of dreams, friends, laughter and gentleness.”
“The men from Ryton who went off to ward would have been scared, unsure of what to expect, but they will have seen in the Ryton community something wroth fighting for. They left family, jobs and friends to preserve the society in which they grew up.”
“Those of us left cannot emulate their courage or bravery, but we can show that their memories are still integral to the community Ryton is today. We do this by honouring their legacy. The presence of us here today shows that our community doesn’t forget sacrifice made in our name, even after a century.”
As Brooke said, “Where these men perished a part of a foreign land has its dust made richer. Here today this bench symbolises that there will always be thankful memories of their bravery in this village they called home, we are richer in spirit for their sacrifice.”

Cllr. Roberts unveils the bench after his speech.
The bench unveiling closes three days of family activities in Ryton-on-Dunsmore celebrating #heritageweekend

The Reverend David Wintle and Cllr. Roberts let loose white doves.
Residents then went on to St. Leonard’s for a special service.
Crazy Daisy 's Nightclub Update
/1 Comment/in News/by PC ClerkMany residents will have noticed that finally the old Crazy Daisy’s nightclub site, which for many years had been a burnt down Chinese restaurant, has been cleared. Seven new houses will be placed on the site.
Crazy Daisies has long been a concern due to the dangers on the site, and prospects for anti-social behaviour. Clearly removing the eyesore is a victory for all local residents.
This has not been an easy victory. Policies to facilitate the renewal of the site were slow in coming forward. It required the initiation of a Rugby District Derelict Buildings Committee by myself and another councillor. The committee has facilitated closer working by bring together the Planning, Building control, Police, Fire, Environmental Health and community safety teams to find workable solutions.
The development of the nearby bob’s Café site, in 2014, heralded the beginning of the roadside improvement of the A45. My next project is to see resolution of the problematic Old Bull and Butcher pub site, on the junction of the Oxford Road and Freeboard Lane. I will keep the village updated on this matter.

War Memorial Restoration
/in News/by PC ClerkHave you seen our War Memorial lately? The Parish Council has at last after a long debate with the heritage people agreed in conjunction with the war grave commission, had the restoration work completed. It was important to have this ready for the September which marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
To go along with this The Parish Council have worked with a sponsor to donate two memorial benches (RPII and collection in the The Malt Shovel) these benches we now have and are awaiting to install nearer the anniversary date.
They will be installed by the War Memorial
We don’t have a photo of the exact design, but the are heavy cast and specially made for the event. The Parish Council have them in storage at present.

The two new benches will be similar design to the ones here.
