Suspension of Youth Club

Message to Parents/Carers from the Youth Club Management Committee

Suspension of Youth Club

Shortly before the Summer break we sent out two major appeals for extra Volunteers for Youth Club. These appeals made it clear that without considerable extra support the Club would not be able to continue. We are grateful to those who responded but sadly the overall response to these appeals has been very disappointing and as a result we do not now have enough Volunteers to keep the Club going.
We are therefore announcing that Youth Club is now suspended and will not re-open in September.
We very much regret this decision and it is not one that we have taken lightly. The current Youth Club has been running for seven years and is widely recognised as having had a very positive impact on the Village. In that time we have been supported by over 50 Volunteers, had over 200 registered Members and provided 6000 Member evenings. The Club also won Warwickshire Youth Club of the Year award in 2011.

We very much hope that a new group of enthusiasts will feel inspired and come forward to take Youth Club forward. Funding is not the issue – we have a healthy bank balance and grants are available. The current Management Committee would be happy to  help with advice on what’s required to run the Club and WAYC (Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs) to whom we are affiliated would also provide plenty of support.
It would be great for the village if Youth Club could continue.

Archaeology Dig

ArchaeologySome of you may have been aware that an archaeological dig has been going on within the new gravel extraction site on Wolston Lane. The dig has not been heavily publicised in order to keep media coverage down in case valuable treasures were found and it attracted treasure hunters.
However the dig is now coming to a close and Simon from Northamptonshire archaeology team will be presenting their findings on Monday morning at 10am at the site in Wolston Lane.
If you are interested in finding out what they found and learn a little about the history of Ryton then come along to hear all about it. Just turn up at the gravel extraction site on Wolston Lane at 10am on Monday 22nd June, 2015.

Upcoming Ryton History Group Events

Rytons FallenThe Ryton History Group have three exciting events taking place in the coming month or so; Remembrance Day Exhibition, Wroth Silver Ceremony plus Breakfast and a day trip to the Melton Mowbray Victorian Fayre day long festival and market.

Remembrance Day Exhibition

The Ryton History Group are in the Village Hall on Sunday 9th November with their Remembrance Day Exhibition.  We start setting up about 10 o’clock before going to the Remembrance Service in Church at 10:45.
Refreshments are available until 12-00.

Wroth Silver Ceremony and Breakfast

Wroth Silver CeremonyThe Ryton  History Group are taking the minibus to the Wroth Silver Ceremony on the 11th November.  We leave the Village Hall about 6-15 in the morning so we watch the payments before dawn.  We then carry on to the Queens Head in Bretford for our breakfast.  Anyone interested contact Steve Garrett 02476 639228 (email) the price for the breakfast is £13 and £2 for the minibus.
Every year (this year is the 885th ceremony) residents from 25 parishes in the area once known as The Knightlow Hundred gather on Knightlow Hill in Ryton-on-Dunsmore at 6.45am on Martinmas Eve to pay their taxes to the Lord of the Manor, currently the 10th Duke of Buccleuch.
The ceremony dates back more than 800 years to 1170AD and bar a short break has been held every year since. Up until 1800 people living in each parish were required to deposit the equivalent of 46 pence into the hollow stone, which lies on top of a grave rumoured to be that of a knight or a British chief. Those who did not pay a set fee were fined 20 shillings for every penny, or forfeited a white bull with a red nose and ears of the same colour.
Nowadays anyone is welcome to attend and, although there is no penalty for non-payment, residents still throw money into the stone on saying the words Wroth Silver once their parish is read out by the Duke’s agent, Christopher Sparrow.

 Day Trip to Melton Mowbray

The Ryton History Group are going to Melton Mowbray Victorian Fayre, a day long festival and market, on the Sunday 7th December. The coach leaves the Village Hall at 10:30 returning 4:30. The price is £9 for members and £12 for non-members. There are still places left so if you are interested in going contact Steve Garrett on 02476 639228 (email).
