Village Defibrillators
Most villagers probably know that Ryton is fortunate to have three defibrillators – one in the Co-op (only accessible during opening hours), one at the Village Hall and one at the Malt Shovel (both available day and night).
A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it’s an essential life saving step in the chain of survival.
The defibrillators are kept in locked cabinets. Having one of these nearby could make all the difference but our first step, in an emergency, has not changed:
In an emergency
• dial 999 immediately
• Then follow the instructions from the local ambulance service. If appropriate, you will be told how to access the nearest defibrillator and what to do.
